DIVERSITY IN LATAM

The struggle for the rights of the LGBTIQ+ community has been a constant struggle around the world, however, in Latin America, it has become a difficult process of acceptance as far as this community is concerned, citing as the first participation that influenced this movement to be reflected in history, the Stonewall Riots, being one of the first most relevant events in the history of the movement.

Likewise, although the struggle dates back to the 60's and early 70's, currently there are still countries in the Latin American region where homosexuality is legally punishable, such is the case of Jamaica and Guyana, whose penalty ranges between 10 years in prison to life imprisonment, in Chile homosexual marriage is authorized, but not civil union, in other countries such as Bolivia, Brazil, Paraguay and Guatemala, homosexual marriage is authorized, but not civil union: Bolivia, Brazil, Paraguay and Guatemala, the law does not implement any type of penalty for marriage of this type.

In spite of each one of the setbacks that this community of people has suffered, in its history we can highlight important characters in universal history that have transcended in some of the fields of our society, such as painting, literature, among others. Among the characters we can mention are:

Frida Kahlo, renowned Mexican painter, who declared herself openly bisexual, married the Mexican painter Diego Rivera, despite this she had extramarital affairs with Josephine Baker and Leon Trotski.

Nancy Cárdenas, Mexican screenwriter and writer, who is considered to be one of the first Mexicans to come out of the closet openly on television, her work was mostly oriented to lesbian identity; Cárdenas contributed to the beginning of the fight against homosexual prejudice in her native country.

Just as we have mentioned women who have not been afraid to raise their voices and say openly that they are members of the LGBTIQ+ community, we can mention that many people have been inspired not only by them, but by the different representatives of the community to have the courage to openly declare that they belong and feel proud to belong to this movement, without thinking about the repudiations that may exist.
